Elizabeth Christiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (13 May 1758 30 March 1824) was an English novelist and aristocrat. She is best known as Lady Elizabeth Foster, the close friend of Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire. For several years he had been collecting materials for a life of Jonathan Swift, but he interrupted his studies in this direction to write his standard Life of Charles Dickens. He had long been intimate with the novelist, and it is this work that John Forster is now chiefly remembered.
